General Course Information

All your AWWOA general course training information is available below:

All AWWOA courses are developed specifically with operator competencies in mind. The certification preparation courses are developed to help operators prepare for writing the provincial exam. Course curriculum, content and questions are intended to reflect what an operator may be tested on during the certification exam.

Classroom Courses

  • Students are responsible for their own accommodation and meals.
  • Pre-registration is required. (walk-in/on-site registration not available)
  • Students to bring their own calculator to class (as required).

Correspondence and Home Study Courses

  • Students have one year from receipt of materials to complete these courses.
  • Once registered any materials will be mailed via Canada Post within 1-3 business days.  Email notification will be sent.
  • Anyone who does not complete the correspondence or home study course within the one year time frame must re-register, re-pay, and redo the course if credit is desired.
  • Registrations accepted all year.
  • Correspondence and home study courses consist of reference manuals, workbooks or mail-in lessons, supplemental training videos (now available online) and information will be sent with your course package. (Note: Course videos on a USB for some courses included but must be returned to the AWWOA office).
  • Home study courses are to be completed and self-marked.  Correspondence courses must mail in their completed lessons for marking.
  • A course completion exam is proctored by supervisor or someone with a professional designation (eg. doctor, lawyer, teacher, engineer, etc.) or in an administrative/office capacity.
  • All home study material may be kept.
  • Applicants who wish to write the certification exam must qualify and MUST apply to the Alberta Environment Water and Wastewater Operator Certification Portal (Compliance365) during the application window for exams (approvals every two months). To qualify, successful course completion must be achieved prior to the submission of the online certification exam application and the course completion certificate must be uploaded with the application. Applicants will also need one year of recognized experience to qualify for certification status. Online Training

  • To register for an online course; you must create a Profile on our website. User information is saved under an email address and user password. If you do not receive a confirmation e-mail notice, you are not registered.
  • Students have one year from registration date to complete an online training course.
  • Registrations are accepted all year.
  • Courses consist of unit chapters for study which include units review questions.  All unit quizzes are marked automatically online.
  • Online assistance via instructor's e-mail and phone.
  • Course completion exam is proctored and automatically marked online, student's supervisor (proctor) is required to register and the account will then be assigned with proctor rights to unlock course completion exams.
  • Applicants who wish to write the certification exam must qualify and MUST apply to the Alberta Environment Water and Wastewater Operator Certification Portal (Compliance365) during the application window for exams (approvals every two months). Note:

  • All AWWOA courses are approved for CEUs by Alberta Environment.
  • The pass mark on all AWWOA course completion exams is 70%. One re-write of the course completion exam is allowed. Anyone achieving less that 70% on the re-write exam must re-register, re-pay and re-take the course.

Classroom Training Subsidy for Small Community Operators

AWWOA members receive $100 off any in-class course registration*. AWWOA offers an additional 25% registration fee reduction for members who are operators from communities serving under 5,000 people. This subsidy is to encourage attendance by offsetting travel costs. When registering for a course, you will be prompted to check the small community box inorder to receive the discount. The member discounts are included in our full course listings.

Course Certificates

All AWWOA course completion certificates are issued via email upon successful completion of a course (within 1-3 business days and attendance verification from instructors).

Certificate Reprints

AWWOA course completion certificates will be re-issued at a cost of $20.00+GST per certificate. To request your reprint, please complete the order form

Refund Policy

We understand situations may arise where you are unable to attend a classroom training session, seminar or workshop, which you have booked. Each case will be reviewed individually and must be pre-authorized by the AWWOA Customer Service Representative before any refund will be issued. The following conditions may apply:

Classroom Courses

  • A service charge of $75 CND will be charged for a cancellation notice received more than 30 days from the course date.
  • There is no refund for cancellation within 30 days of the course date
  • Substitution of registrants may be accepted, if they meet course requirements.
  • Course Completion Certificates or CEU's will not be issued if there is an outstanding balance.

Correspondence, Home Study & Online Courses

  • Return any training materials to the AWWOA office (complete and in good condition). This includes manuals, workbooks, and electronic videos (USB).
  • In the case of home study training material; once we have received and inspected the returned package, you will receive credit for the product and taxes (where applicable) to the credit card used for the purchase. The returned package must be unmarked.
  • In the case of the Pumps, Theory, Operation & Maintenance home study course, the manual and Video USB must be returned in its original condition, otherwise a $500 CND fee will be levied.
  • You are responsible for freight costs to return materials. Unfortunately, materials sent C.O.D. to our office will be refused.
  • Online and Home Study courses must be completed within the allotted time limit posted under the course description. If time is allowed to expire the client must re-register, pay full price, and complete the course in its entirety within the allotted time in order to receive CEU’s and a course completion certificate.
  • Course Completion Certificates or CEU's will not be issued if there is an outstanding balance.
