Description

This course will present the many and varied opportunities for beneficial re-use of biosolids, and the regulatory environment and public relations challenges that guide and shape this re-use. The core of the course focuses on the different beneficial re-use options on large and small scales, using examples and case studies from across North America.

Participants will be introduced to the production and preparation approaches (thickening, digestion, dewatering) that are required to achieve the right quality of the end product.

The current and future regulatory environment around management and re-use of biosolids will be discussed with a focus on Alberta, and to a lesser extent Canada.

The importance of proactive public relations will be woven throughout the content.

Note: If you have previously taken this course through Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence (EWMCE) you cannot receive CEUs again.

Outline

By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Describe the different ways in which biosolids are produced and prepared.
- Analyse the intended end-use of the biosolids in order to identify the ideal production and preparation method.
- Understand how existing and proposed regulations impact the production, preparation and beneficial re-use of biosolids in Alberta, and to a lesser extent Canada
- Recognize and reflect on the importance of public relations/communication when working with biosolids
- List beneficial re-use approaches and/or products.
