2018 - Pre-Seminar Workshop #4 - Understanding Wastewater Biology

CEUs

0.3 CEUs

Description

This workshop will delve into the biology of efficient wastewater treatment systems. Starting with the hard science, attendees will learn how to identify the causes behind common problems encountered by wastewater operators and be provided with biology-based cost saving solutions for each of them.

Specifically this workshop will address:
-Nitrification

For good nitrification to occur a system requires:
● dissolved oxygen, pH, carbonate alkalinity and temperature levels within specific
ranges;
● no toxins;
● and nitrifying bacteria.

The absence (or presence) of any of one these can lead to the nitrification process
slowing or ceasing. Better understand the underlying science of the seven steps to
nitrification. Operators will learn about properly diagnosing nitrification problems and
identifying the appropriate solutions.

-Key Filamentous Bacteria
What are filamentous bacteria and why do they form? Learn how to prevent
foam-causing filamentous bacteria from showing up in your system. Attendees will also
learn how to work with the biology of your wastewater plant to eliminate existing foam
causing filaments like Microthrix and Nocardia.

-Grease Control
Fats, oils and grease (FOG) are often improperly disposed of and can quickly build up in
a wastewater treatment system. Whether in lift stations, or elsewhere in the
wastewater plant, FOG can lead to sewage backups, blockages and overflows. Different
forms of FOG and how they are broken down in the wastewater treatment process will
be discussed.
Operators will learn how to control FOG by utilizing biological solutions to turn them
into helpful fatty acids.

-Lagoon Systems
This presentation will cover:
● lagoon biology basics;
● how sludge accumulation causes and contributes to the vast majority of lagoon
problems and options for overcoming those challenges; and,
● the dominant causes of algae in lagoons and control options.
